Cloaking
Cloaking is a deceptive black hat SEO technique where a website presents different content or URLs to human users than it does to search engine crawlers. The goal is to trick the algorithm into ranking a page for specific keywords while showing users completely unrelated, often spammy, content. Google’s Webmaster Guidelines explicitly forbid cloaking, and the algorithm is highly adept at detecting it. The penalty for cloaking is severe, typically a manual action resulting in complete removal from the search index. The only viable long-term strategy is transparent, high-value content that serves both users and search engines equally.
Cloaking Simplified
Cloaking is a cheating tactic where a website shows one version of a page to Google to get high rankings, but shows a completely different, usually spammy page to actual human visitors. It is strictly against the rules and results in severe penalties.
