XML Sitemap Index
An XML Sitemap Index is a master file that acts as a directory for multiple individual XML sitemaps. Because search engines restrict single sitemaps to a maximum of 50,000 URLs or 50MB, massive enterprise domains and e-commerce platforms must partition their URLs into specialized sitemaps (e.g., products, categories, blog posts, images). The XML Sitemap Index consolidates these separate files into one unified roadmap, allowing Googlebot to efficiently discover and crawl hundreds of thousands of dynamic pages. Submitting a perfectly configured sitemap index to Google Search Console is the foundational step for scalable crawl management.
XML Sitemap Index Simplified
A sitemap index is the master map that organizes all the smaller maps of your website. If you have a massive online store with millions of products, the index tells Google exactly where to find the separate lists of shoes, shirts, and accessories.
