BERT Update
The BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) Update, rolled out in 2019, was a massive leap forward in Google’s Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities. Unlike previous algorithms that analyzed search queries word-by-word in a linear fashion, BERT analyzes the entire sentence simultaneously, allowing it to understand the nuanced context of prepositions (like “to” and “for”) and complex conversational phrasing. This fundamentally changed SEO. It rendered keyword density obsolete and forced content creators to focus entirely on answering the specific, nuanced intent behind a user’s question, rather than just optimizing for broad, disjointed keywords.
BERT Update Simplified
The BERT Update was a massive upgrade to Google’s “brain” that allowed it to understand human language much better. Instead of just looking at individual keywords, Google learned how to read entire sentences and understand exactly what the searcher meant, making it much harder to trick the system with keyword stuffing.
