A backlink is a hyperlink from one website to another. Backlinks are the foundational currency of the internet and remain one of Google’s top three ranking factors. Every backlink acts as a “vote of confidence” from one entity to another. Data shows that pages ranking in the #1 position on Google have an average of 3.8x more backlinks than pages ranking in positions #2 through #10. However, not all votes are equal. Low-quality, spammy backlinks will actively harm your site, while a single contextual backlink from a highly authoritative publication can move rankings dramatically. Quality always outweighs quantity.
