Content Freshness
Content freshness is a confirmed Google ranking factor, primarily driven by the “Query Deserves Freshness” (QDF) algorithm, which dictates that certain search queries require the most up, to-date information possible. For topics like news, software reviews, or financial data, a page published yesterday will almost always outrank a more authoritative page published three years ago. However, simply changing the publish date on an old article is a manipulative tactic that Google ignores. True content freshness requires materially updating the text, adding new data points, and ensuring the page reflects the current state of the industry.
Content Freshness Simplified
Content freshness is Google’s preference for new, up, to-date information. If you search for “best smartphones 2024,” Google will actively push down articles written in 2022, no matter how good they are, because the information is no longer fresh or accurate.
