Googlebot
Googlebot is Google’s proprietary web crawling bot. It constantly scours the internet, following links from page to page, reading content, and sending that data back to Google’s servers to be indexed. There are different versions of Googlebot, most notably the smartphone crawler and the desktop crawler. Because Google uses mobile-first indexing, the smartphone Googlebot is the primary crawler for the vast majority of websites. If your site blocks Googlebot via the robots.txt file, or if your server is too slow for Googlebot to efficiently crawl, your site will not rank. Technical SEO is fundamentally the practice of optimizing for Googlebot.
Googlebot Simplified
Googlebot is the automated computer program Google uses to read the internet. It travels from website to website, reading all the text and code, and saves that information so Google can show your website to people searching for your products or services.
