Session duration is the total amount of time a user spends interacting with a website during a single visit (session), from the moment they land on the first page to the moment they exit the site entirely or become inactive for 30 minutes. It is a critical metric in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) for evaluating overall domain quality and user engagement. A high average session duration indicates that the website’s internal linking structure is highly effective, the content is deeply compelling, and the user interface encourages exploration. In contrast, a low session duration combined with a high bounce rate strongly suggests a fundamental disconnect between the search intent and the content provided.

Session duration is the total amount of time someone spends on your website before leaving. If they read three different articles and stay for ten minutes, your session duration is excellent. If they leave after five seconds, your website has a major problem that needs fixing.
